This is a novella set after the last book in the Descent series (Dire Blood) and told mainly from James' perspective. It helps progress the story from where we left off and we get a better understanding of why things happened the way they did. In addition to that, Ms.Reine has very skillfully added new twists to this very awesome story. Normally I do not enjoy flipping around from the H and h's POV but I've become so invested in this story that it didn't bother me. Also, i didnt feel that this ending was as much of a cliffhanger. Thank you, Ms. Reine. of course you'll need to read the next to find out other things, and maybe because the last cliffhanger was such a doozy, but this one had a more satisfying closure while making me want to read the next book. I read this in one evening and would whole-heartedly recommend this series to anyone who likes urban fantasy.Product details

I might need a few minutes after reading this book. Or a week. I don't know. A lot happens. A LOT. And I'm all flaily hands at things now. So, if this doesn't make sense, blame S.M. Reine. *nods*
Seriously, I don't know if I know where to start. I mean, THINGS HAPPEN and they aren't all good. We're given answers to questions we didn't even know we should be asking and OMG!WTF?I HATE THE UNION.
So. Elise. She's not in this book much. Which is funny because every step James takes here is with her in mind. Alas, poor Elise has been dropped in the garden and James is going to do his damnedest to find a way to get her out. His damnedest is pretty darn accurate, come to think. He travels to a hell dimension or two, consorts with demons (AS ONE DOES!), and ... err, does other stuff.
But that's all in the past now, right? Water under the bridge. James might have been lying to Elise for the last ten years but... okay, wait. How does one come back from that? They've died for one another. They've pulled each other out of impossible situations. Elise came back from the dead and went to hell to save James.
Their relationship is very tangled, isn't it?
I ADORE this series. It's insane and fast paced and darkly brutal at times and it's utterly captivating. I am completely smitten with everything that's fallen out of S.M. Reine's head at this point. And I'm deathly afraid of the final book in this series.
No matter. I'm going to read it anyway. ONWARD!

I usually read a series when I can read it all together back to back because I'm not very patient. I can't believe I have to wait for the next book. With all that being said, I'd still HAPPILY would have spent the last 6 days reading this series because it is excellent! I don't even think the next book in this series will end it because there are so many great paths it can explore further. The writing style and world Reine created blows my mind with its creativity, especially as a writer myself. The story lines are as riveting as the characters' mind blowing depths. It's truly amazing to see what a brilliant mind can imagine. I found myself in awe of this writer and humbled.
The series, I believe must be started at the beginning. In no way do I want to over share here and blow the experience for anyone who reads it so while I'm sorry I'm vague I think you'll agree when you read the series. I'd strongly suggest that you don't read any reviews that delve to deeply into specifics in the storyline. It would hurt the brilliance that you are experiencing as you can't wait to turn the next page. With that being said ..
The main characters Elise and James are both broken in many ways but complete each other in others that developed beautifully. So many motivations and secrets are revealed in this book, and they are shocking. For me, they provoked so many conflicting emotions within. I was sad for them both but hopeful that it can still work out because you can't count either one of these two out. I was mad at one but my heart broke in sympathy at the same time. I rooted for people I didn't expect and hated people I thought I wouldn't. I loved the brilliant supporting people of the story that were so unexpected. Elise is strong, independent, loyal, a force of nature with a spine of steal. She is also emotionally broken by an exceptionally hard life. James' love and constant companionship while strengthening her maybe the one thing that has the power to destroy her. James' love and will may also be the only thing that saves them both from a fate set for them long before either was ever born.
As I said before, what I loved most was how unexpected this whole new world Reine created is. I will dream about it because the creation was so real that I was immersed. Even with all the screwed upness of that world I would love to visit, and CAN NOT WAIT until Reine brings it back again. I may actually re-read the series, which is something I have NEVER done! HUNDREDS OF BOOKS ON MY KINDLE AND NEVER ONCE HAVE I REREAD BEFORE NOW! I'm just not ready to leave Elise and James yet. Additionally, I'm sure between the unbelievable amount of depth and my need to find out what happened next, I'm sure I'd see even more with a reread. Have fun reading this series, I'm smiling for the experience your getting ready to have.
I really do enjoy SM Reine's writing. Her description and details throughout this entire series is remarkable. From places on Earth, to ruins under cities, Hell, Heaven and in between as well as Humans, demons of every sort, Angels and Grays make each book totally enjoyable. This book gives us a deeper look at Hell and shows us how corruption, deception and the desire for power are not only Earthly desires. James and Elise barely escape from Hell, find their long suppressed love for one another and then the truth James has hidden for years sends Elise into GOD hands. Can he get her back while risking his sons life as well as his own? Only the next book will tell. Kathy Barber Doyle - 12/22/2016
